Abstract The objective of this work was to verify if there is variability in the dry matter accumulation rate of grains of the carioca-type common bean, as well as to identify the success of selection for this trait and the best time for harvest. Sixteen lines with carioca-type grains were evaluated in three sowing seasons through samples of five plants obtained at regular intervals. A quadratic equation was used to estimate the number of days to obtain the maximum dry matter in the grains. A low variability was observed among the lines, discouraging selection for this trait. The ideal moment for harvesting is when 100% of the grains present the typical stripes of carioca common bean, which may vary among and within pods of the same plant. If the harvest is carried out before complete physiological maturation is reached, the dry matter in the grains decreases, on average, 2.75% per day.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar se há variabilidade na taxa de acúmulo de matéria seca nos grãos de feijão comum do tipo carioca, bem como identificar o sucesso na seleção para este caráter e a melhor época para colheita. Dezesseis linhagens com grãos do tipo carioca foram avaliadas em três épocas de semeadura, por meio de amostras de cinco plantas, obtidas em intervalos regulares. Utilizou-se equação quadrática para estimar o número de dias para obtenção do máximo de matéria seca nos grãos. Observou-se baixa variabilidade entre as linhagens, o que desestimula a seleção para esse caráter. O momento ideal para a colheita é quando 100% dos grãos apresentam as listras típicas do feijão carioca, o que pode variar entre e dentro das vagens da mesma planta. Se a colheita for realizada antes da maturação fisiológica completa ser atingida, a matéria seca nos grãos é reduzida, em média, 2,75% por dia.

Abstract Angular leaf spot (ALS), caused by the fungus Pseudocercospora griseola, is one of the most important foliar fungal diseases in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The search for new sources of resistance to ALS is a promising activity in common bean breeding programs. In this study, the reaction of 416 germplasm accessions from the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA) to P. griseola (race 63-63, the most important and most aggressive race) was assessed under greenhouse conditions (plants in the V2 stage, fully developed unifoliolate leaves). We identified 102 (24.5%) resistant and 314 (75.5%) susceptible accessions. Among the resistant lines, more than half are Carioca grain type lines. This study characterizes the resistance of a wide collection of common bean genotypes. The identification of new accessions resistant to P. griseola is an important step in common bean breeding programs. These lines can continually be incorporated in backcrosses to obtain cultivars resistant to ALS.

RESUMO O feijoeiro comum (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) é uma leguminosa de grande importância econômica e nutricional em todo o mundo; portanto, o desenvolvimento de estratégias de manejo para promover o crescimento das plantas e aumentar a produtividade de grãos é de grande interesse para os agricultores. Os efeitos da promoção de crescimento por simbiose de microrganismos endofíticos com plantas têm sido explorados em várias culturas. Este estudo investigou os efeitos sobre o crescimento e a produtividade de grãos em feijoeiro por meio de fungos endofíticos Induratia inoculados em sementes. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação no delineamento de blocos completos casualizados com três repetições. Foram avaliados a altura de planta, comprimento de raiz, índice foliar, número de dias para o florescimento, número de vagens por planta, número de grãos por vagem, massa de 100 grãos e produtividade de grãos. A produtividade das plantas inoculadas com Induratia coffeana (CML 4018, CML 4020) e Induratia sp. (CML 4015) aumentou 52,5%, 48,9% e 56,4%, respectivamente, em comparação com os controles. A inoculação de sementes de feijão com espécies de fungos endofíticos do gênero Induratia apresentou interação benéfica, aumentando a produtividade de grãos. Este estudo pioneiro é importante para o desenvolvimento de estratégias de manejo visando o aumento da produtividade do feijoeiro.

ABSTRACT Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a leguminous species of great economic and nutritional importance worldwide, and thus the development of management strategies to promote plant growth and increase grain yield of legumes is of great interest to farmers. The growth-promoting effects of the symbiosis of endophytic microorganisms in plants have been exploited in several crops. This study investigated the effects of Induratia sp. endophytic fungi on the growth and grain yield of seed-inoculated common bean plants. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse during two growing seasons using a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Growth and yield-related parameters such as plant height, root length, leaf index, number of days for flowering, number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, mass of 100 grains, and grain yield were evaluated. The grain yield of plants inoculated with Induratia coffeana strains CML 4018 and CML 4020 and Induratia sp. strain CML 4015 increased by 52.5%, 48.9%, and 56.4% compared to the non-inoculated control, respectively. Seed inoculation of common bean plants with endophytic fungi species of the genus Induratia showed a beneficial interaction as indicated by the recorded increase in grain yield. The present pioneering study could provide the means for developing crop management strategies for enhancing common bean crop productivity.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a reação de linhagens de feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris) ao fungo Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, a agressividade dos isolados, e a herança de resistência ao mofo-branco, em duas condições ambientais. Os experimentos foram realizados em condições de campo e casa de vegetação. Em cada um deles, quatro isolados foram inoculados em 14 linhagens de feijoeiro-comum pelo método de inoculação “straw test” e a severidade nas plantas foi avaliada. Não se identificaram linhagens de feijão-comum com alto nível de resistência ao mofo-branco, e a maioria delas mostrou-se moderadamente resistente ao patógeno. Em geral, as cultivares BRS Campeiro, BRS Radiante, BRSMG Talismã e Ouro Negro destacam-se quanto à resistência. Na condição de campo, o isolado UFLA 3 discrimina bem as linhagens, enquanto, na casa de vegetação, UFLA 26 e UFLA 92 são os isolados mais agressivos. Além disso, de acordo com o estudo genético, a maior parte da variação encontrada pode ser atribuída à resistência horizontal, embora uma pequena parte esteja associada à resistência vertical.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the reaction of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) lines to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the aggressiveness of the isolates, and the inheritance of resistance to white mold, under two environmental conditions. The experiments were carried out under field and greenhouse conditions. In each one, four isolates were inoculated in 14 common bean lines using the straw-test inoculation method and severity on plants. No common bean line with a high level of resistance to white mold was identified, and most of the lines were moderately resistant to the pathogen. In general, the BRS Campeiro, BRS Radiante, BRSMG Talismã, and Ouro Negro cultivars stand out for resistance. Under field conditions, the UFLA 3 isolate discriminates well the lines, while, under greenhouse conditions, UFLA 26 and UFLA 92 are the most aggressive isolates. Furthermore, according to the genetic study, most of the observed variation can be attributed to horizontal resistance, although a small part is associated with vertical resistance.

Abstract The success of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) crops in Brazil is due to the development of new cultivars. The aim of the present study was to critically analyze the fifty years of a bean breeding program at the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA) and estimate the genetic progress (GP) achieved for grain yield. The estimated genetic progress for grain yield was 0.35% per year, which is associated with visible improvement in plant architecture, resistance to some pathogens, and better carioca bean grain quality. The program was found to be efficient, generating 119 theses and 43 dissertations during the period under study. In addition, hundreds of articles have been published, especially studies aimed at improving the efficiency of genetic breeding programs. Over the past few years, partnerships with other public institutions in performing Value for Cultivation and Use tests have resulted in 12 recommended cultivars.

ABSTRACT: Phenotyping for severity of angular leaf spot (ALS) in common bean is important to identify new sources of resistance and select progenies in conventional and molecular marker-assisted breeding. In this study, three phenotyping methods for ALS severity were assessed and its implications in breeding for resistance to Pseudocercospora griseola are discussed. Reaction of 144 common bean lines to P. griseola was evaluated. Three different experiments were conducted in the greenhouse (V2 and V3 stages) and in the field. Common bean lines were inoculated with a mixture of spores of pathogen races 63-63 and 63-23. We observed that 31 %, 7 % and 10 % of lines were resistant in stages V2, V3 and in the field, respectively. Estimates of coincidence index V2-V3, V2-field and V3-field were 68 %, 69 % and 88 %, respectively. Evaluations in V3 stage and in the field were the phenotyping methods more efficient for ALS severity. However, evaluation in V3 stage is impracticable to assess routinely many genotypes in breeding programs. Evaluation in V2 stage may be used to carry out a first screening, especially in the early stages of breeding programs. Moreover, this methodology may be used in association with evaluation of plants in the field to increase genetic gain.

RESUMO: A pinta preta é uma das doenças fúngicas mais importantes da cultura da batata. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, in vitro, a reação de genótipos de batata à pinta-preta e comparar as espécies Alternaria grandis e Alternaria solani , por meio da avaliação de características fisiológicas. Foram avaliados 22 genótipos do Programa de Melhoramento Genético de Batata da UFLA, sendo duas cultivares, padrões de resistência e suscetibilidade. Foram inoculados três isolados de A. grandis e dois de A. solani . As plântulas, obtidas in vitro, foram inoculadas com os isolados de Alternaria spp., incubadas e classificadas quanto à severidade. Os isolados de Alternaria spp. foram avaliados quanto ao índice de velocidade de crescimento micelial (IVCM) e a formação de grupos de compatibilidade micelial (GCM). A metodologia de avaliação precoce in vitro da reação dos genótipos à severidade da pinta-preta foi eficiente para os isolados de ambas as espécies de Alternaria . Os isolados de A. grandis e A. solani apresentaram comportamento semelhante quanto à agressividade. Os isolados de A. grandis apresentaram IVCMs superiores e, portanto, crescimento micelial mais rápido. A ocorrência de compatibilidade micelial entre isolados de A. grandis e A. solani indica a possibilidade de ocorrência do ciclo parassexual.

ABSTRACT: Early blight is one of the most important fungal diseases of potato. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro reaction of potato genotypes to the severity of early blight and compare the species Alternaria solani and Alternaria grandis , etiologic agents of disease, through the evaluation of physiological characteristics. Twenty-two genotypes of the Potato Breeding Program at UFLA, two cultivars, Aracy and Bintje, patterns of resistance and susceptibility, respectively were evaluated. For inoculation, three isolates of A. grandis and two isolates of A. solani were used. Plantlets obtained in vitro were inoculated with a 5mm diameter mycelial disk of isolates Alternaria spp. of. These were incubated in severity and classified according to the rating scale. Isolates of Alternaria spp. were evaluated for mycelial growth index (MGI) and for formation of mycelial compatibility groups (MCG). The methodology for evaluating the in vitro reaction of genotypes to severity of early blight was efficient for both isolates. The isolates of A. solani and A. grandis were similar in their aggressiveness. The isolates of A. grandis MGI's had higher, and therefore mycelium grew faster when compared to those isolated from A. solani . The occurrence of mycelial compatibility among isolates of A. solani and A. grandis indicated the possible occurrence of parasexual cycle.

Pseudocercospora griseola, agente etiológico da mancha angular do feijoeiro comum (Phaseolus vulgaris), é uma doença importante nas regiões produtoras de feijão em todo o mundo e pode causar perdas de produtividade extremamente elevados. O controle dessa doença é dificultado pela variabilidade genética do patógeno e da ineficiência de fungicidas. Neste estudo, de 26 óleos essenciais testados em concentrações diferentes, 25 demonstraram eficiência em inibir a germinação das linhagens 63-31 e 63-63 do agente patogênico, atingindo níveis de inibição entre 80% e 100%. Cymbopogon citratus e Cymbopogon martini inibiram a germinação de conídios em todas as concentrações; Eugenia caryophyllata, Cinnamomum sp., Thymus vulgaris, Matricaria recutita, Cordia verbenacea, Origanum vulgare, Cymbopogon nardus, em 0,1 e 0,5%, e Zingiber officinale, Mentha arvensis, Chamaecyparis pisifera, Lavandula officinalis, Ocimum basilicum, Pimpinella anisum, Ocimum selloi, Baccharis dracunculifolia, Laurus nobilis, Citrus sinensis, Melaleuca alternifolia e Eucalyptus globulus, em 0,5%. Os principais constituintes identificados foram cinamaldeído em Cinnamomum sp.; Eugenol em E. caryophyllata; trans-β-farneseno em M. recutita; pulegona em C. verbenacea; timol em T. vulgaris; geranial e neral em C. citratus e geraniol em C. martini. Através de microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (TEM), verificou-se que C. citratus, C. martini e E. caryophyllata apresentaram ação antifúngica direta sobre P. griseola, causando graves danos na ultraestrutura celular dos conídios, invalidando a germinação. Esses resultados indicaram que os óleos essenciais são uma estratégia alternativa promissora para o controle da mancha angular do feijoeiro, o que representa menos risco para a saúde humana e ao ambiente.

Pseudocercospora griseola, the etiologic agent of angular leaf spot of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), is an important disease in all bean-producing regions worldwide and may cause extremely high yield losses. The control of this disease is made more difficult by the pathogen's genetic variability and the inefficiency of fungicides. In this study, of 26 essential oils tested at different concentrations, 25 demonstrated efficiency in affecting the germination of strains 63-31 and 63-63 of the pathogen, reaching inhibition levels of between 80% and 100%. Cymbopogon citratus and Cymbopogon martinii inhibited conidia germination at all concentrations; Eugenia caryophyllata, Cinnamomum sp., Thymus vulgaris, Matricaria recutita, Cordia verbenacea, Origanum vulgare, Cymbopogon nardus, at 0.1 and 0.5%; and Zingiber officinale, Mentha arvensis, Chamaecyparis pisifera, Lavandula officinalis, Ocimum basilicum, Pimpinella anisum, Ocimum selloi, Baccharis dracunculifolia, Laurus nobilis, Citrus sinensis, Melaleuca alternifolia and Eucalyptus globulus, at 0.5%. The main constituents identified were cinnamaldehyde in Cinnamomum sp.; eugenol in E. caryophyllata; trans-β-farnesene in M. recutita; pulegone in C. verbenacea; thymol in T. vulgaris; geranial and neral in C. citratus, and geraniol in C. martini. Through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), it was verified that C. citratus, C. martini and E. caryophyllata presented direct fungitoxic action on P. griseola, causing severe damage to the cellular ultrastructure of the conidia, invalidating germination. These results indicated that essential oils are a promising alternative strategy for the control of angular leaf spot in bean, representing less risk to human health and the environment.

O presente trabalho apresenta os fatores que afetam a produção e regeneração de protoplastos de Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. O isolamento de protoplastos é muito relevante para diferentes aplicações, principalmente, em procedimentos que envolvem a manipulação genética. Estabilizadores osmóticos, enzimas líticas, tempo de incubação e idade micelial foram testados com relação ao efeito na liberação de protoplastos. As condições otimizadas para produção de protoplastos foram incubação de micélio jovem (48 h) em estabilizador osmótico NaCl 0.6 mol l-1, acrescido de 30 mg ml-1 da enzima Lysing Enzymes de Trichoderma harzianum incubado, durante 3 h. Nessas condições, a obtenção de protoplastos foi maior que 10(6) protoplatos ml-1 na mistura de digestão, número suficientemente adequado para experimentos de transformação em fungos. Sacarose nas concentrações de 1.2 mol l-1 e 1 mol l-1 foram os estabilizadores mais apropriados para a regeneração, após 48 h, sendo as taxas de regeneração de 16.35% e 14.54%, respectivamente. Este estudo produziu um método eficiente para produção e reversão de protoplastos à morfologia micelial típica de Colletotrichum lindemuthianum utilizando o isolado LV115.

The present work reports factors affecting the production and regeneration of protoplasts from Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. The usefulness of protoplast isolation is relevant for many different applications and has been principally used in procedures involving genetic manipulation. Osmotic stabilizers, lytic enzymes, incubation time and mycelial age were evaluated in terms of their effects on protoplast yield. The optimal condition for protoplast production included the incubation of young mycelia (48 h) in 0.6 mol l-1 NaCl as the osmotic stabilizer, with 30 mg ml-1 Lysing Enzymes from Trichoderma harzianum for 3 h of incubation. In these conditions protoplasts production was higher than 10(6) protoplatos ml-1 in the digestion mixture, number suitable enough for experiments of transformation in fungi. Sucrose concentrations of 1.2 mol l-1 and 1 mol l-1 were the most suitable osmotic stabilizers for the regeneration after 48 h, with rates of 16.35% and 14.54%, respectively. This study produced an efficient method for protoplast production and reverted them into a typical mycelial morphology using a Colletotrichum lindemuthianum LV115 isolate.

Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (teleomorfo Glomerella cingulata f. sp. phaseoli) apresenta ampla variabilidade genética, demonstrada por suas características morfológicas. Com este trabalho, objetivou-se caracterizar, por meio de marcadores morfológicos, diferentes isolados de C. lindemuthianum e identificar marcadores morfológicos com uso potencial em análises genéticas. Foram avaliados os seguintes caracteres morfológicos e culturais: cor e textura das colônias, compatibilidade vegetativa e sexual, índice de velocidade de crescimento micelial (IVCM), diâmetro colonial (DC), capacidade de esporulação (CE), dimensões e formas conidiais, dimensões dos ascósporos, formação de estruturas reprodutivas e formação de anastomoses entre hifas e conídios. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que os isolados de C. lindemuthianum possuem ampla variabilidade genética para todas as características avaliadas e que a forma do conídio pode ser usada como marcador morfológico em análises genéticas.

Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (teleomorfo Glomerella cingulata f. sp. phaseoli) presents wide genetic variability, demonstrated by its morphological traits. The objective of this study was to characterize morphological markers in different isolates of C. lindemuthianum and, to identify useful morphological markers in genetic analyses. The following morphological and cultural traits were evaluated: color and texture of the colonies, vegetative and sexual compatibility, micelial growth index (MGI), colonial diameter (CD), esporulation capacity (EC), conidia dimensions and form, ascospores dimensions and formation of reproductive structures. The data showed wide genetic variability for all traits and that conidial form can be used as morphological marker in genetic analysis.

Visando estudar a viabilidade do emprego do delineamento em blocos aumentados e de métodos de análise espacial nas etapas iniciais dos programas de melhoramento de eucalipto, foram avaliados 121 tratamentos, sendo 113 progênies de meios-irmãos de Eucalyptus urophylla e oito clones, em dois locais: São Mateus, Estado do Espírito Santo, Brasil, e Posto da Mata, Estado da Bahia, Brasil. O delineamento utilizado foi um látice 11 x 11, com três repetições por local. Em cada bloco foram colocadas, aleatoriamente, quatro testemunhas. Cada parcela foi constituída por uma linha de seis plantas, no espaçamento 3 x 3 m. Os dados da circunferência à altura do peito (cm/planta), aos 19 e 26 meses de idade, foram submetidos à análise de variância, considerando as seguintes metodologias: látice, blocos aumentados, blocos ao acaso, método de Papadakis, método das médias móveis e testemunha intercalar. Realizou-se a comparação entre os diferentes métodos quanto à sua eficiência, a partir das seguintes estimativas: coeficiente de variação, herdabilidades e seus respectivos intervalos de confiança, correlação de Spearman e as metodologias de Fasoulas (1983) e Hamblin & Zimmerman (1986). Os resultados obtidos indicaram que o uso do delineamento em blocos aumentados é viável para seleção de progênies e clones nas etapas iniciais dos programas de melhoramento genético de eucalipto, principalmente se for aplicada uma intensidade de seleção moderada; porém esse delineamento não se mostrou apropriado para a estimação de parâmetros genéticos e fenotípicos, devido à baixa precisão das estimativas. Os métodos de testemunha intercalar e análise de vizinhança, o Papadakis (1937) e o método das médias móveis foram eficientes no controle da heterogeneidade dos blocos, sendo esta eficiência similar àquela proporcionada pela análise em látice.

The feasibility of using augmented block designs and spatial analysis methods for early stage selection in eucalyptus breeding programs was tested. A total of 113 half-sib progenies of Eucalyptus urophylla and eight clones were evaluated in an 11 x 11 triple lattice experiment at two locations: Posto da Mata (Bahia, Brazil) and São Mateus (Minas Gerais, Brazil). Four checks were randomly allocated within each block. Plots consisted of 15 m long rows containing 6 plants spaced 3 m apart. The girth at breast height (cm/plant) was evaluated at 19 and 26 months of age. Variance analyses were performed according to the following methods: lattice design, randomized complete block design, augmented block design, Papadakis method, moving means method, and check plots. Comparisons among different methods were based on the magnitude of experimental errors and precision of the estimates of genetic and phenotypic parameters. General results indicated that augmented block design is useful to evaluate progenies and clones in early selection in eucalyptus breeding programs using moderate and low selection intensities. However, this design is not suitable for estimating genetic and phenotypic parameters due to its low precision. Check plots, nearest neighbour, Papadakis (1937), and moving means methods were efficient in removing the heterogeneity within blocks. These efficiencies were compared to that in lattice analysis for estimation of genetic and phenotypic parameters.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o emprego do delineamento em blocos aumentados e de métodos de análise espacial nas etapas iniciais dos programas de melhoramento do feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Foram avaliadas 121 famílias S2, provenientes de um programa de seleção recorrente, em três locais: Lavras, Lambari e Patos de Minas. Utilizou-se um látice simples 11 x 11, por local. Adicionalmente, foram incluídas duas testemunhas, Carioca e EMGOPA201-Ouro, cada uma alocada a intervalos regulares de cinco em cinco parcelas em cada bloco. A parcela foi composta por duas linhas de dois metros, com 15 sementes por metro. Os dados de produção de grãos (g/parcela) foram submetidos a uma análise de variância considerando os seguintes delineamentos e métodos: látice, blocos aumentados, blocos ao acaso, método de Papadakis, método das médias móveis e testemunha intercalar. Realizou-se a comparação entre as diferentes estratégias quanto à eficiência no controle do erro experimental e em relação à precisão das estimativas de parâmetros genéticos e fenotípicos obtidas em cada método. Constatou-se que o emprego do delineamento em blocos aumentados é viável para a seleção de famílias nas etapas iniciais dos programas de melhoramento genético, principalmente se for aplicada uma intensidade de seleção moderada; porém, esse delineamento não se mostrou apropriado para a estimação de parâmetros genéticos e fenotípicos, em virtude da baixa precisão das estimativas; o uso de testemunha intercalar não proporcionou melhoria na precisão experimental; os métodos de análise de vizinhança, Papadakis e o das médias móveis, foram eficientes no controle da heterogeneidade dos blocos, sendo esta eficiência similar àquela proporcionada pela análise em látice.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the viability of using the augmented block designs and spatial analysis methods for early-stage selection in breeding programs for common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). A total of 121 S2 progenies were evaluated in three locations: Lavras, Lambari and Patos de Minas, Brazil. A simple 11 x 11 lattice design was employed by location. Additionally, two controls, Carioca and EMGOPA 201-Ouro, were included. The split plots were composed by two 2 m lines with 15 seeds/m. The data of the production (g/plot) were submitted to a variance analysis, considering the following strategies: lattice design, augmented block design, randomized complete block design, Papadakis' method, moving means method, and check plots method. The comparison between the different strategies was done considering their efficiency in controlling the experimental error and in relation to the precision of the estimates of genetic and phenotypic parameters obtained in each method. General results indicate that augmented block design is useful in earlier stage of selection, when the intensities of selection are moderate to low; however, this design is not useful for estimation of genetic and phenotypic parameters due to lower precision of estimates; the use of check plots method did not improve the experimental precision; the nearest neighbour, Papadakis and moving means methods were efficient in removing the heterogeneity within blocks; this efficiency was equivalent to lattice analysis for estimation of genetic and phenotypic parameters.

O sucesso de um programa de melhoramento de milho visando à obtenção de híbridos está intimamente ligado à identificação da população mais promissora para a extração de linhagens. O presente trabalho objetivou identificar procedimentos para a escolha dessas populações. Para isso, foram obtidas populações segregantes S0, S1 e 196 famílias S0:1 de cada um dos quatro materiais comerciais avaliados: híbridos simples (C 333B e Z 8392), duplo (AG 1051) e variedade (BR-105). Os experimentos foram conduzidos na safra agrícola 98/99 em duas localidades na região sul do Estado de Minas Gerais: Lavras e Ijaci. Na avaliação das 196 famílias S0:1 de cada população foi empregado o delineamento látice simples 14 x 14. Adicionalmente foi instalado um experimento em blocos casualizados, com 4 repetições, para avaliação simultânea das gerações F1, S0 e S1 A partir dos dados de produtividade de espigas despalhadas (kg por parcela) das gerações F1, S0 e S1, foram obtidas as estimativas da contribuição dos locos em homozigose (m + a) e em heterozigose (d). Foram também foram estimados os parâmetros genéticos e fenotípicos com os experimentos das famílias S0:1. Constatou-se que houve boa associação (r = 0,81) entre a estimativa de (m + a) e a média das famílias S0:1 e que população com maior potencial para a extração de linhagens, maior (m + a), foi a AG 1051. A correlação entre as estimativas de (d) e h² foi baixa, indicando que a estimativa da contribuição dos locos em heterozigose não foi bom indicador da variabilidade potencial da população.

The identification of the population with greatest potential for inbred line extraction is directly linked to the success of a maize hybrid breeding program. This study was carried out to identify procedures for selecting these populations. Segregant S0, S1 populations and 196 S0:1 families were obtained from each of four commercial cultivars assessed: single hybrids (C 333B and Z8392), double hybrid (AG 1051) and variety (BR-105). The experiments were carried out during the 1998/99 season, in two locations in the southern region of Minas Gerais State, Brazil: Lavras and Ijaci. A 14 x 14 simple lattice design was used in the assessment of the 196 S0:1 families from each population. A randomized complete blocks design with four replications experiment was also set up to assess, simultaneously, the F1, S0 and S1 generations. The husked ear yield (kg/plot) of the F1, S0 and S1 generations was obtained and the contribution of the homozygous locos (m + a) and heterozygous locos (d) were estimated. The genetic and phenotypic parameters were also estimated using the S0:1 family experiments. A high correlation (r = 0.81) between the (m + a) estimate and the S0:1 family mean was observed. The AG 1051 population showed the greatest potential for line extraction, i.e., greatest (m + a) value. The correlation between the d and h² estimates was low, indicating that the estimate of the contribution of the heterozygous locos was not a good indicator of the potential variability of the population.
